Pranayama purifies the nervous system and eliminates toxins from the body and blood. It helps in the curing of asthma, congestion, and other respiratory disorders.
Proper breathing can help to eliminate the excess mucous which causes most hay fever and sinus discomfort. Blood circulation can be exhilarated and the entire body stimulated. Pranayama practice produces lightness of body, alertness of mind, good appetite, proper digestion, and sound sleep. Pranayama helps one to enjoy radiant health, although that is a secondary benefit of pranayama practice. The main aim is to discipline the mind through the prana. As prana is regulated through the movement of the breath, that same pranic movement will be present in the mind. Should one ever feel upset, tense, or worried, slow, deep breathing with full attention on the breath can bring the mind to a calm state.
