Eightfold Path of Raja Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice, which seeks to restore harmony and balance to the mind, body, and spirit. Developed by the sages of India 5,000 years ago, yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word for union. Combining physical postures (asanas) breath control (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana) yoga serves as a connection to our higher consciousness. Practicing yoga with consistency and devotion with a healthy posture revitalizes the seven main energy centers, (chakras), and provides a wonderful balance of physical and spiritual well-being.

  1. Yama (Restraints)
The yamas include nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation in all things, and non-possessiveness. Making a habit of practicing yamas purifies words, thoughts, and deeds.
  2. Niyama. (Observances)
The niyamas are purity, contentment, austerity, study of revered texts, and living with awareness of Divine presence. Consistent practice of the niyamas creates a positive attitude and awakens one’s ability to concentrate.
  3. Asana
Asanas are intended for the thorough exercise of the internal organs including the thyroid and other endocrine glands which play a very important role in maintaining health. Yoga postures emphasize the spinal column. Regular practice increases flexibility, improves circulation and range of motion, strengthens and tones musculature all while maintaining proper spinal alignment for optimum well being. The slower pace of movement increases oxygen intake which reduces fatigue.
  4. Pranayama (control and awareness of the breath)
Proper breathing exercises purify and charge our systems with energy in order to calm and regulate the mind.
  5. Pratyahara - Practice of controlling one’s desires
Understanding that it is possible to find peace and contentment from within
  6. Dharana - Art of concentration
  7. Dhyana - Meditation - quietness of the mind
  8. Samadhi - A complete stillness in which one searches for Atman (our true Self).
